Ige receives nominees for open Kona Circuit Court judgeship

Gov. David Ige on Monday received a list of nominees from the state Judicial Selection Committee to fill a Third Circuit Court judgeship left vacant by the retirement of former Kona Circuit Judge Melvin Fujino. The nominees are:

• Wendy M. DeWeese, who’s a district family court judge on Hawaii Island. She received a Bachelor of Arts from Pomona College in California and a law degree from Southwestern University School of Law.

• Mark D. Disher, who’s a county deputy prosecutor. He received his Bachelor of Science in criminal justice from Chaminade University of Honolulu and a law degree from the William S. Richardson School of Law, University of Hawaii at Manoa.

• Cynthia T. Tai, who’s executive director of Project Expedite Justice and a per diem judge in the District and District Family Courts of the Third Circuit. She received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Southern California and a law degree from the McGeorge School of Law, University of the Pacific.

• Kimberly B. M. Taniyama, who’s an attorney in private practice and a per diem judge in the District Court of the Third Circuit. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in biology and English from Loyola Marymount University and a law degree from the William S. Richardson School of Law, University of Hawaii at Manoa.

Ige will interview each nominee and is seeking public comment on the governor’s website at governor.hawaii.gov.

Ige has until Oct. 13 to make his appointment, which is subject to state Senate confirmation.
