The state Department of Health today reports 131 new COVID-19 cases on the Big Island.
Hawaii County Civil Defense said the DOH is monitoring 920 active cases and 21 people are hospitalized.
Statewide, 655 new cases have been reported, according to Lt. Gov. Josh Green in a post on social media.
“The Department of Health has determined that the County of Hawaii has reached community spread of coronavirus,” Civil Defense said this morning in a message. “This means that you may be exposed to coronavirus whenever you leave your home.”
Civil Defense urged residents to protect themselves by wearing face coverings, distancing and limiting gathering sizes.
Another community test is scheduled for 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium in Hilo. Vaccinations also will be available.
