A 5-year-old boy was taken to Hilo Medical Center in critical condition after almost drowning at Kawa Bay in Ka‘u, according to the Hawaii Fire Department.
According to a written statement, firefighters got the alarm at 9:01 a.m. with three units, including a medical unit responding.
The first unit arrived at 9:19 a.m., using an off-road vehicle to access the remote beach.
Fire personnel found a family member performing CPR on the pulseless and unresponsive child. A firefighter took over resuscitation efforts, successfully.
The off-road vehicle was used to transport the boy to a waiting ambulance, where medical personnel initiated advanced life-support treatment and took the child to Ka‘u Hospital, where he was stabilized.
The boy was later transported to Hilo Medical Center and was, at last report, in critical condition.
