The state Department of Land and Natural Resources is launching an independent evaluation of the University of Hawaii’s compliance with the Maunakea Comprehensive Management Plan.
The state Department of Land and Natural Resources is launching an independent evaluation of the University of Hawaii’s compliance with the Maunakea Comprehensive Management Plan.
The evaluation will parallel a mandatory review of the plan being conducted by UH and will specifically analyze the efficiency of the university’s management, particularly its Office of Maunakea Management, as well as the overall effectiveness of UH’s Maunakea governance structure.
“This process will ensure a thorough review that includes multiple points of view and provides an independent evaluation for the Land Board,” DLNR chairwoman Suzanne Case said in a statement.
The current plan was approved by the DLNR board in 2009 and covers approximately 11,000 acres of state lands on Maunakea that are leased by the university.
The DLNR evaluation is anticipated to be completed by the end of 2020.
