Amy Iwamoto joined Zonta Club of Hilo in 1969, and she is the clubs second longest-serving member. The local service club was founded in 1950 and is part of Zonta International, which is celebrating its centennial this month.
Amy Iwamoto joined Zonta Club of Hilo in 1969, and she is the club’s second longest-serving member. The local service club was founded in 1950 and is part of Zonta International, which is celebrating its centennial this month.
“Amy has been instrumental in various STEM honors and activities by our club,” said current club president Elyse Robinson. “She has served for 50 out of 100 years of Zonta’s existence. That’s remarkable.”
During her half-century as a Zontian, Iwamoto has had the positions of club president and secretary and attended the Zonta International Convention in Australia, as well as various District 9 conferences. She is a retired educational services coordinator for Hawaii Electric Light Co.
Chairman of the club’s Amelia Earhart Committee, Iwamoto helps organize Amelia Earhart Girls’ Engineering and Science Day, put on annually at Waiakea High School to support female students to continue science, technology, engineering and mathematics education throughout middle school, high school and college. She also coordinates Zonta Club of Hilo’s participation in the annual Astronaut Ellison Onizuka Science Day in January at UH-Hilo.
Zonta International has grown to more than 29,000 members in 63 countries, working together to make gender equality a reality for women and girls worldwide.
