During the week of Sept. 30-Oct. 6, Hawaii Island police arrested 18 motorists for DUI. One of the drivers was involved in a traffic accident and none were younger than 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 11; Puna; four; South Hilo, two; and Ka‘u, one.
So far this year, there have been 856 DUI arrests compared to 868 during the same period last year, a decrease of 1.4 percent.
There have been 735 major accidents so far this year compared to 941 during the same period last year, a decrease of 21.9 percent.
There have been 15 official traffic fatalities so far this year, compared to 25 for the same time as last year, a decrease of 40 percent. There have also been three road-related deaths police don’t count toward the official traffic fatality total — one because an autopsy found the death was due to a medical condition, another because an autopsy found the death was due to natural causes and the third because the fatal crash occurred within the boundaries of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, which is under federal jurisdiction.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
