The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will provide an update on the Waiakea and Palai stream flood control study during a community meeting from 6-9 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12, in the Hilo Municipal Golf Course Multipurpose Room.
Earlier this year, the Army Corps and county Department of Public Works Engineering Division hosted a series of meetings seeking community input about different proposed measures to reduce flood impacts involving Waiakea and Palai stream areas. Officials will provide an update on the feedback they received and final recommendations during the community meeting.
Army Corps staff also will provide an updated timeline to complete the processes mandated by the National Environmental Policy Act and the feasibility report. They will take questions and explain the next steps of the design phase and implementation.
It’s estimated that design and review of the recommended measures will take about a year, followed by a year of construction.
Neighborhoods within close proximity of the Waiakea and Palai streams and Four-Mile Creek are encouraged to attend.
The golf course is located at 340 Haihai St.
