The 2018 Kilauea eruption changed not only the Big Island itself but also the people and communities of lower Puna.
Now, one year later, it’s still hard to believe, especially for those who were directly affected.
Wailoa Center and Hawaii Island Art Alliance are sponsoring “Transformations: One Year Later,” on exhibit through the end of this month, featuring pieces by those who have a story to tell about their experiences through art, writing and song.
If you haven’t seen it yet, there’s still time.
Wailoa Center is free and open to the public from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

“Abstract Only!” is coming to Wailoa Center from Aug. 2-29. The exhibit is sponsored by the Hawaii Island Art Alliance and features 103 works of art by 46 artists from Hawaii Island and 26 artists from Oahu, Maui, Kauai, Japan, New Hampshire, Illinois, Washington, D.C., Ohio, Oregon, California, Texas, Utah, Alaska, Maryland and Michigan.
An artists’ reception is slated for 5-7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 2. Light refreshments will be served. The event is free and open to the public.
