During the week of July 1-7, Hawaii Island police arrested 21 motorists for DUI. Five of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. Two of the drivers were under the age of 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona and South Hilo, 10 each; and Puna, one.
Police said arrests on other charges stemmed from the DUI arrests, including one for open container of alcohol, one for driving after license suspended, six for driving without a license, four for driving without insurance and one for marijuana possession. In addition, there were five arrests for other related moving or regulatory violations.
So far this year, there have been 586 DUI arrests compared to 614 during the same period last year, a decrease of 4.6 percent.
There have been 467 major accidents so far this year compared to 671 during the same period last year, a decrease of 30.4 percent.
To date, there have been 14 official traffic fatalities compared to 15 fatalities for the same time last year, a decrease of 6.7 percent for fatalities.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
