KAILUA-KONA — A 39-year-old man charged with assault in connection with a stabbing in Kalaoa is out of custody pending a preliminary hearing next month.
Jared Dunn of Kailua-Kona was granted release on his own recognizance after his initial appearance Monday before Kona District Judge Cynthia Tai. He was being detained on $10,000 bail set by police when he was charged June 7 with two counts of second-degree assault in connection with the alleged stabbing of two men.
The judge’s ruling followed a request for supervised release of Dunn by his public defender, attorney Ann Datta. Prosecutor’s objected to the request.
Dunn is next set to appear in court July 8 for a preliminary hearing. During the hearing, prosecutor’s will work to show they have probable cause to support the assault charges and remand the case to Circuit Court for adjudication.
Dunn was charged June 7 with two counts of second-degree assault following a reported stabbing at about 9:15 p.m. the night prior on Ahililani Street in Kalaoa. Upon arrival, police found two Kailua-Kona men with injuries to their head and face consistent with a stabbing.
The men, ages 25 and 62, were taken to Kona Community Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries, police said.
Second-degree assault is punishable by up to five years imprisonment upon conviction.
