Volcano Art Centers Hula Arts at Kilauea performance series continues Saturday, May 18, with a presentation by the haumana of Ke Ana Laahana Public Charger School under the direction of kumu hula Wahineaukai Mercado. Volcano Art Center’s Hula Arts at Kilauea performance series continues Saturday, May 18, with a presentation by the haumana of Ke Ana La‘ahana Public Charger School under the direction of kumu hula Wahineaukai Mercado. Ke Ana La‘ahana is a Hawaiian focused charter school in Keaukaha serving grades 7-12.
The performance begins at 10:30 a.m. and takes place in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Park entrance fees apply.
This performance is part of a year-round series sponsored by Volcano Art Center.
Hula halau from throughout Hawaii are invited to perform in a one-of-a-kind outdoor setting at the kahua hula (platform) in the park. These performances are presented authentically in an outdoor setting, rain or shine, without electronic amplification.
Audience members are encouraged to bring with them sun/rain gear and sitting mats.
Hosted in conjunction with the performance, join Volcano-area musician Wes Awana on the VAC Gallery porch for this month’s “Na Mea Hula” (“All Things Hula”) event. Awana will share his love of the ukulele and Hawaiian music by performing and giving family-friendly ukulele lessons.
“Na Mea Hula” cultural demonstrations are hands-on and family friendly and take place from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.
