Teacher housing bills die in House

Two bills that aimed to improve teacher retention have died in the state House.

Senate Bill 12 and Senate Bill 114 called for the creation of a housing voucher program for teachers employed by the state Department of Education or at public charter schools.

Both measures, which passed over to House leaders for consideration last month, were referred to the House committees on Housing, Lower and Higher Education, and Finance.

While both bills were heard and approved, with amendments, by the Housing and Lower and Higher Education committees and passed second readings in the House, they were never heard by the Finance Committee.
