The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has awarded $26,646 to the Hawaii County Housing Authority to provide permanent affordable housing to three additional nonelderly persons with disabilities.

The housing assistance announced Tuesday is provided through the HUD’s Section 811 Mainstream Housing Choice Voucher Program.
“Expanding mainstream housing assistance for people with disabilities is a vital and cost-effective measure that reduces homelessness,” said Regional Administrator James Stracner in a HUD news release. “With this targeted investment, HUD provides stable and affordable housing for people who may be homeless or at-risk of homelessness or institutionalization.”
The award adds to initial investments announced in September, which included $99 million to hundreds of public housing agencies across the country and benefiting over 12,000 people with disabilities.
