Hurricane Olivia continues toward Hawaii while Norman weakens

While Hurricane Norman veers further away from Hawaii, Hurricane Olivia remains on a route heading straight for the islands.

Friday morning, the center of Olivia was located 1,460 miles east of Hilo, traveling west-northwest at 16 mph, with maximum sustained winds of 115 mph, according to the Central Pacific Hurricane Center.

Olivia, currently a Category 3 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale, is projected to reach the islands Wednesday morning, although the storm is expected to weaken over the next several days.

Norman, meanwhile, continues to track northwest at 9 mph, with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph. The center of the storm, now barely a Category 1 hurricane, was 275 miles northeast of Hilo Friday morning.

East-facing shores of the Big Island are under a high surf warning until 6 p.m. this evening — although an extension of the warning into tomorrow is possible — as a swell from Hurricane Norman strikes the island. Residents are warned to remain cautious and to avoid the affected coasts wherever possible.
