During the week of Jan. 8-14, Hawaii Island police arrested 24 motorists for DUI. Three of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. Five of the drivers were under the age of 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, nine; South Hilo, six; Puna, four; Ka‘u and North Kohala, two each; and South Kohala, one.
Other arrests stemmed from the DUI arrests, according to police: two each for speeding and driving while license suspended; five for driving without a license; 11 for driving without insurance; and one for promoting a dangerous drug. In addition, there were five arrests for other related moving or regulatory violations, police said.
So far this year, there have been 41 DUI arrests compared to 56 during the same period last year, a decrease of 26.8 percent.
There have been 28 major accidents so far this year compared to 60 during the same period last year, a decrease of 53.3 percent.
To date, there have been no traffic fatalities, compared to two fatalities at the same time last year.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
