Boys &Girls Club of the Big Island hosted its annual Youth of the Year Fundraising Gala, honoring some of the outstanding youth who participate in the many youth development programs the organization offers around Hawaii Island.
Hilo High School student Shelsi Candaroma, 16, was named BGCBI 2017 Youth of the Year. She received a $500 scholarship. Shania Rivera, 18, who also attends Hilo High, was honored as the Hilo Club Youth of the Year.
The Youth of the Year event also honored outstanding community supporters who have been instrumental in BGCBI’s success:
Ivan Nakano, BGCBI board treasurer and director of dealer operations at I. Kitagawa &Co. Ltd., received the Honoree of the Year award. He was instrumental in keeping BGCBI doors open, incorporating BGCBI, served as chief volunteer officer from 2000-04 and is a trusted adviser.
BGCBI’s Foundation Award was awarded posthumously to Clifton K. Tsuji for his energetic and long-time service to Hawaii Island youth and communities. Tsuji’s eldest son, Ashley, accepted the award.
The Youth of the Year event is one of many fundraisers the nonprofit BGCBI hosts throughout the year to help carry out its mission to inspire and prepare youth to achieve and become successful community contributors.
The evening was filled with recognition of service and support, lighthearted humor and heartfelt stories of hope and empowerment.
