Farmers award scholarship

KaMele Sanchez, a recent graduate of Honokaa High School, received a $1,000 scholarship from the Hilo Kinoole Farmers Market.

Sanchez will attend Colorado State University at Fort Collins in the fall and will major in agricultural and biological engineering.

The Hilo Kinoole Farmers Market is a local farmers market sponsored by the Hawaii State Farm Bureau. Local farmer Cyrus Wagatsuma is the market president.

Lions support Keaau seniors

The Puna Lions Club recently awarded two $750 Rick Edwards scholarships to two Keaau High School seniors during the school’s senior awards night.

Receiving the awards were graduates Angelica Salom and Taliesin Sumner.

Order honors UHH student

Kylie Grogg, a University of Hawaii at Hilo student, received an endowed scholarship from Hawaii Chapter No. 1 Order of the Eastern Star.

The scholarships are awarded to UH-Hilo and Hawaii Community College students with Masonic affiliation personally or through a relative. Some of the Masonic affiliations are Eastern Star, Rainbow Girls, Masons, Scottish Rite, York Rite, DeMoley and Shriners.

Interested students can check with their campus Financial Aid Office for the application period and procedures.

2 make grades at Gonzaga

Christa Lum of Hilo and Edgar Bartolome of Pepeekeo earned placement on the Gonzaga University president’s list for spring semester 2015. Students must earn a 3.7 to 4.0 grade-point average to be listed.

Gonzaga University in Spokane, Wash., is a humanistic, private Catholic university providing a Jesuit education to more than 7,500 students.

Degrees earned at Oregon IT

Two Big Island students graduated this month from the Oregon Institute of Technology.

Shaylen Kawhianapua Fasae Rosas of Hilo earned a degree in diagnostic medical sonography, and Ashley Nicole McDaniel of Hilo earned a degree in dental hygiene.
