Volcano Art Center continues its patronage of creative dance with an exciting and incredibly distinctive workshop with Shizuno Nasu, titled “Dancing on the Earth: Blossoming Lotus Creative Flow &Dance Meditation.”

Join renowned and classically trained dance artist Nasu for her latest workshop rooted in deep listening and improvisation. Students will walk through Niaulani’s native rain forest to gather inspiration for movement passages, explore Fu-Sui-Ka movements based on the elements of water, wind and fire, and enjoy seated movement meditation inspired by the female goddess Miroku.

Accompanying Nasu during her workshop will be crystal bowl musician Izumi Hashimoto, special percussion performer Aki-Ra and workshop dance assistants Rieko Inoue from Kyoto, Japan, and Jenn Eng, from Hiloi.

“Dancing on the Earth” is from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday at Volcano Art Center’s Niaulani Campus in Volcano. Class fee is $50 for VAC members and $55 for nonmembers. No dance experience is necessary; lunch not included. For more information or to register, call VAC at 967-8222 or visit www.volcanoartcenter.org.

Nasu was born in Osaka, Japan, and began her classical ballet training at age 3. She was chosen as an exchange student with the Bolshoi Ballet at age 7 and made her debut as a professional dancer at age 19. She has won high praise throughout Europe, Asia and the U.S.

Nasu’s quest for her own stylistic voice led her to study old Japanese mythological dances.

Nasu currently resides in Volcano, where she generates new spiral visions, teaches dance and aspires to bring cultures together through international cultural exchange.

“I am dancing with life itself, expressing the magnificent drama, fleeting and precious!” Nasu says of her work. She emphasizes that in her workshop, all hearts are welcome.
