Dr. Susan Jarvi, chief of the University of Hawaii at Hilo’s pre-pharmacy program, will give a free presentation Sunday in Pahoa on the most recent research regarding water and food safety to prevent rat lungworm disease.

The event is scheduled for 2-4 p.m. at the Pahoa Community Center.

Shannon “Smiley” Burrows organized the event in hopes of raising awareness in her community. She said her son, Phoenix Roewe, recently was infected with the disease, likely contracting it from water in the family’s catchment system.

Burrows said she expects a large turnout at Sunday’s event, which will include information about a new diagnostic research study being offered at Pahoa Urgent Care starting this month.

“People in Pahoa need to hear this,” she said of the information that will be presented.

The Pahoa Community Center is at 15-2910 Puna Road.
