WAILUKU, Maui (AP) — Maui County is settling a federal lawsuit that alleged unconstitutional interference with a Facebook page.
Settlement terms include the county paying $25,000 in attorneys’ fees and damages and re-writing its anti-harassment policy, the American Civil Liberties Union of Hawaii said Friday in announcing the settlement.
Neldon Mamuad, a part-time county employee and volunteer member of the county’s liquor commission, filed a lawsuit in March claiming that he was pressured to stop working on a Facebook page devoted to posts about traffic and other Maui news. Mamuad claims the county violated his free speech rights by trying to censor the popular “MAUIWatch” page, which he worked on during his personal time.
The county will also expunge any record of disciplinary action related to Mamuad’s free speech activities, the ACLU said. The settlement was reached Thursday.
Fair takes heat

HONOLULU (AP) — Animal rights activists are objecting to the Hawaii state fair booking a performing bear show.
A Grizzly Experience is scheduled to appear for three weeks at the fair.
Animal Rights Hawaii President Cathy Goeggel says the act is a tawdry traveling show that exploits animals. She says long-distance travel is cruel.
Bear show owner Dexter Osborn says A Grizzly Experience is an educational show.
State Board of Agriculture chairman Scott Enright approved an import permit for the bears in April.
Man set on fire remains critical
HONOLULU (AP) — A 47-year-old man whom police say was set on fire remains in critical condition but stable at a Honolulu hospital.
Police say the man was set on fire Wednesday night by a drinking buddy.
The 44-year-old suspect was taken into custody on suspicion of second-degree attempted murder but had not been charged as of Thursday night.
Police say the men started drinking beer early in the day on a patio outside the suspect’s home and began to argue.
Police say the suspect poured gasoline on the other man’s head, and despite being restrained by his mother and another person, managed to ignite the liquid with a lighter.
The onlookers rolled the man on the ground and doused him with water from a garden hose.
