Brigham Young University-Hawaii officials announced Friday that the NCAA Division II school will phase out its athletics program over the next three years.
The decision was announced by the university’s president and board of trustees based on emerging trends in intercollegiate athletics that have made it difficult to continue the program, a spokesperson from the Laie, Oahu campus said.
BYUH sponsors 11 intercollegiate athletic teams, all that compete in the PacWest — men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, and women’s volleyball.
BYUH officials said all committed scholarships will be honored, and the scheduled seasons will be completed.
During and after the three-year transition period, full- and part-time coaches and staff will be given access to employment resources and opportunities for placement inside and outside of the university as needed, the spokesperson said.
