Japan, S. Korea, U.S. to practice
HONOLULU (AP) — Japan, South Korea and the United States will hold joint exercises in waters off Hawaii this week.
The U.S. Pacific Fleet said in a statement Monday the drills will include a search-and-seizure exercise, a counter-piracy event, a search-and-rescue exercise and officer exchanges.
Three U.S. Navy and Coast Guard ships will participate. They are the guided-missile cruiser USS Port Royal, the guided missile destroyer USS Chafee, the dry cargo ship USNS Matthew Perry and the cutter USCGC Galveston Island.
The drills scheduled for today and Wednesday come shortly after monthlong Rim of the Pacific multinational exercises were held in Hawaii.
Both Japanese and South Korean forces participated in RIMPAC.
The Pacific Fleet says the drills will help the nations work better together, improve readiness and boost proficiency.
Cayetano suffers
bleeding ulcer
HONOLULU (AP) — Former Hawaii Gov. Ben Cayetano is in the hospital after suffering a bleeding ulcer, just days before the primary election in his quest to become mayor of Honolulu.
Cayetano’s wife Vicky Cayetano drove her husband to the emergency room Sunday at the advice of his doctor. Campaign Manager Sam Callejo says the 72-year-old had cold sweats and blood in his stool.
The former governor is running for mayor as a candidate vowed to stop Honolulu’s rail project. Callejo says the hospitalization won’t affect his campaign.
Cayetano will remain at the Queen’s Medical Center until today or Wednesday, pending tests and surgery.
Callejo says that because he suffered a similar episode in 1997 while governor, he knew the symptoms. He was hospitalized for five days back then.
