The Hawaii County has announced that the ongoing repair project for the Kaiwilahilahi and Honoli‘i Stream bridges will now extend through Feb. 27, 2026.
Originally set for completion this month, the timeline for the repairs has been delayed due to the discovery of additional damage during the initial phase of work.
The repair project, which began in January 2024, is being conducted by Isemoto Contracting. The work is being fully funded by the Federal Highway Administration and the Hawaii Department of Transportation.
The total construction cost for the repair and restoration of both bridges is estimated at approximately $16.8 million, according to Tom Callis, a public information officer for the county.
The two bridges, located on Old Mamalahoa Highway in Papa‘aloa and Kahoa Street in Pauka‘a, are vital infrastructure for local traffic. As a result, motorists are advised to anticipate ongoing disruptions, including detour routes and road closures, until the completion of the project.
Both bridges will remain closed for the duration of the repairs.
The extensive repair work includes replacing deck drains, addressing concrete spalls and cracks, applying waterproofing to the bridge decks, and repaving the asphalt.
Traffic will be redirected through temporary traffic controls, with flaggers helping to guide vehicles safely through construction zones. Local traffic will be permitted access as needed.
Callis further noted that, since the repair work is weather-dependent, the final completion date could shift slightly due to unforeseen weather conditions or other factors.
