During the week of Sept. 4-10, Hawaii Island police arrested 16 motorists for DUI. Three of the drivers were involved in a traffic collision. One of the drivers arrested was under the age of 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, six; Puna and Hilo, four each; and North Kohala, two.
So far this year, there have been 676 DUI arrests compared to 695 during the same period last year, a decrease of 2.7%.
There have been 577 major collisions so far this year, compared to 568 during the same period last year, an increase of 1.6%.
So far this year, there have been 12 official traffic fatalities, compared to 25 fatalities (including one was reclassified to a medical condition) for the same time last year. This represents a decrease of 52% for fatalities.
The nontraffic fatality count — fatal crashes that weren’t on a public roadway — is one, compared to zero nontraffic fatalities for the same time last year.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
