September was the month for the Great Cycle Challenge USA.
Bicycle riders around the country rode a pledged number of miles in an attempt to raise their pledged monetary commitment. For the third year in a row, Mike Meyer, a member of the Rotary Club of Hilo, met his goals to help fund the fight against childhood cancer.
Meyer pledged to ride at least 1,000 kilometers (about 620 miles) and to raise $2,500. Both goals were reached. Meyer wore his Rotary jersey because of the help and support he received from his fellow club members.
Meyer said he feels strongly about childhood cancer because of the 15,700 keiki diagnosed each year, with 38 dying annually.
“Cancer sucks!” Meyer said. “It sucks worse to have it when you are a child or being a family member watching a child suffer with this.”
