Tropical storm warning in effect for Hawaii as Darby approaches

A tropical storm warning is in effect for the state of Hawaii as Tropical Storm Darby, which continues to weaken and is no longer a hurricane, continues its track to the south of the islands.

At 5 a.m. today, the center of the storm was 610 miles east-southeast of Hilo. Maximum sustained winds are near 70 mph with higher gusts.

The storm continues to move to the west at about 16 mph, and forecasters expect this movement to continue during the next couple of days with a slight increase in forward speed.

The forecast track will bring the center of Darby, or its remnant low, south of the Big Island on Saturday.

Darby is expected to bring an increase in rain, possibly isolated thundershowers and higher surf to eastern shores as it approaches.

Darby is expected to weaken into a post-tropical remnant low late Saturday or Saturday night before dissipating on Sunday.

Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 60 miles from the center of the storm.
