Wailoa Center and the Hawaii Island Art Alliance welcome 41 artists from throughout the state invited to be part of the second annual Hawaii Statewide Juried Plein Aire Painting Exhibit, which opens today and runs through Feb. 25.
An open house is planned for 1-6 p.m. today. Artists and the public are invited to attend. Awards will be announced in advance.
All COVID protocols of wearing a mask and social distancing will be required.
Richard Rochkovsky, this year’s juror, selected 111 paintings of images from throughout the Hawaiian Islands reflecting each artist’s unique perspectives.
Rochkovsky is based in Kona and has a bachelor of architecture degree with a minor in art from the University of Virginia. He has architectural works in Washington, Virginia and Hawaii.
“For me, painting furiously and intensely for three hours, trying to capture the ever-changing moods and character of a scene, is the culmination of everything that I’ve done and know — the challenge, of course, is to forget all of that and just paint — after all, it’s just light, right? …” said Rochkovsky. “The qualities that I look for, in my own and my tribe-mates’ paintings, are expressive brush work, dynamic juxtapositions of colors and the creative use of textures.”
Rochkovsky also will be showing a collection of his recent paintings in Wailoa Center’s Fountain Gallery during the exhibit and will be at today’s open house.
Artists participating in this year’s exhibit are Christine Ahia, Victoria Arthur, Henry Bianchini, Vivian Bratton, Thinam Carroll, Susan Champeny, Stan Chraminski, Michael Donenfeld, Christopher Edwards, Tuko Fujisaki, June Gerteisen, Ann Guth, Bonnie Hahn, Eide Hansamut, Shery Henderson, Judith Hudson, Peter Jefferson, Moses Kealamakia, Jack Kinkelaar, Chris Kutler, Bonnie Mandoe, Amy Markham, Mark Martel, Caroline Mitchel, Marilyn Montgomery, Gerald Murai, Janice Gail Naiditch, Lynn Nakkim, Dorothy Norris, Christal Nylin, Abbie Rabinowitz, Diane Renchler, Ginger Sandell, Michelle Schwengel-Regala, Sunny Seal, Leslie Sears, Victoria Serrao, Virginia Small, Ann Smith, Roger Tinius and Karrianne Warren.
Wailoa Center is free and open to the public from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and closed Saturdays, Sundays and on state holidays.
