“Hawaii Island has seen a large increase of positive cases in recent weeks,” Civil Defense said in a coronavirus update this morning. “Most of these recent cases are not travel related, which means the virus is being transmitted within the community.”
According to Civil Defense, data from the state Department of Health shows that the majority of those now being affected are under the age of 40.
Increased testing, especially in Kona, is being scheduled.
“This high increase of the coronavirus is of great concern and demonstrates the critical need for you to follow the preventive policies of face coverings, distancing and gatherings,” Civil Defense said. “Know that the preventive policies are mandated and the Hawaii Police Department will continue the enforcement of these policies.”
As of this morning, Civil Defense said 10 individuals are hospitalized and a total of 48 deaths have been reported.
