Taimane performs in free concert celebrating family caregivers

Ukulele virtuoso Taimane will perform in a free AARP Hawaii online concert celebrating family caregivers of older adults in recognition of National Family Caregivers Month in November. The concert can be seen on a Zoom link and will be simulcast on the AARP Hawaii Facebook page at 6 p.m. Friday.

During the concert, AARP Hawaii will share information about caregiving resources and sponsor a drawing for five $100 gift certificates to buy locally-produced food. Go to aarp.org/hi or the AARP Hawaii Facebook page and click on Upcoming Events to get a Zoom link.

“Music has positive benefits for listeners, including caregivers and the loved ones they care for,” said Keali‘i Lopez, AARP Hawaii State Director. “A recent study concluded that music can potentially stimulate brain health, reduce stress and has the potential to help people with brain health conditions like dementia, stroke and Parkinson’s disease.”

Experts say music can also be a tool for caregivers and help them share in positive experiences with their loved ones. Specialized music-based treatment may also improve movement, speech and recovery in patients with Parkinson’s disease and stroke.

“There are an estimated 157,000 caregivers in Hawaii who provide 131 million hours of care worth $2.1 billion if they were paid. They deserve a break,” said Jackie Boland, AARP Hawaii Outreach Director.

“This concert is for them and also for anyone else who wants to connect with others and listen to good music.”

The concert is open to anyone of any age. You don’t have to be an AARP member to participate.

Those who register for the concert may enter a prize drawing during registration. Five $100 gift certificates to purchase locally-grown food will be awarded to winners selected at random during the concert. No purchase is necessary and you must be watching the concert to win and indicate your acceptance in the Zoom chat or Facebook Live comments.
