The Three Mountain Alliance, the Hawaii Island Art Alliance, the state Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Forestry and Wildlife and the Wailoa Center State Park are proud to announce “Hawai‘i Nei 2020,” a juried art exhibition celebrating the native flora and fauna of Hawaii Island.
Amateur and professional artists of all ages are invited to submit works of art highlighting the native plants, animals and habitats of the island, our Hawai‘i nei. Artwork will be displayed Nov. 6-Dec. 10 at Wailoa Center. All residents of Hawaii Island are eligible to participate. Additionally, the exhibition will be viewed by the Acquisition Award Selection Committee under the Hawaii State Foundation.
All submissions must feature a native species (arrived naturally without the help of humans) to Hawaii Island either endemic or indigenous, be original, created in the past two years and have not been previously shown in any other exhibition, gallery, contest or website.
Artwork in any medium or combination of media is welcome. All native species found from ridge to reef on Hawaii Island are acceptable. Artwork made from endangered native species is strongly discouraged.
All artwork must be registered online by Oct. 16 at www.hawaiineiartcontest.org. An online profile must be created to submit artwork. An entry fee and photo of the artwork is required for registration.
Youth artwork will be registered on a separate entry form and is free to submit.
Initial online screening and jurying will take place Oct. 17.
Accepted artwork drop-off dates, times and locations are:
• 10-11 a.m. Oct. 30 at Donkey Mill Art Center in Holualoa.
• 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Oct. 31 at Wailoa Center in Hilo.
West Hawaii participants are required to have their items boxed and ready for transport to Hilo.
There are five age divisions for entry: adult, lower elementary school (grades PK-3), upper elementary school (grades 3-5), middle school (grades 6-8) and high school (grades 9-12). Students do not need to be affiliated with a school to enter. Class or group entries also are available for adults and youth.
For adult entries, there will be separate divisions for amateur and professional artists. Artists are asked to use their discretion to choose a division. For this exhibition, a professional artist is defined as an artist who exhibits and sells work on a regular basis.
Prizes will be awarded for all divisions. A cash prize will be awarded for adult Jurors’ Choice.

Current exhibition
“The Abstract Only!” 10th anniversary exhibit is open at the Wailoa Center in Hilo. This exhibit generated 394 submissions, out of which 144 pieces were chosen by 120 artists from throughout the United States. The exhibit will be posted at wailoacenter.com and available for viewing in person until Oct. 28. Visitors can learn about the artists honored and selected for cash awards and also vote for their favorite artwork by casting their ballot for the People’s Choice Award, giving the artist with the most votes a much-appreciated recognition and a cash award.
