Singer-songwriter-musician Jasmine Crowe, a Hilo native, has cracked the Billboard charts with her song “Chess Game.”
The song, from her debut album “Symptoms,” which was released last month, debuted on the industry magazine’s Dance Club Songs chart at No. 49 and has climbed to No. 37. The poppy original was remixed by C-Rod, Matt Moss and Nitemover.
Crowe, now based in Los Angeles, is an electro-pop multi-instrumentalist who plays piano, guitar and violin. Her 2018 single “Breaking Things,” which she wrote with Josh Anderson, took the $20,000 grand prize “Song of the Year” in the John Lennon Songwriting Competition.
“‘Chess Game’ was born from a very honest place,” Crowe told Billboard. “One night, my co-writer Kailey Shaffer and I were talking about all the struggles we’ve been through, trying to navigate life and relationships, especially as young women in our industry, feeling like we were tired of playing everyone else’s games. Inspired to write something uplifting, ultimately this song turned into an infectiously driven and empowering anthem in the face of adversity. The symbolism of the lyrics represents transformation, realizing your inner strength and having the courage to take back your true power.”
Her music can be heard on Spotify, YouTube and downloaded online. She has upcoming engagements Jan. 11, 2020, at The Mint in Los Angeles and March 14, 2020, at Cafe Escobar Malibu in Malilu, Calif.
