During the week of Sept. 16-22, Hawaii Island police arrested 21 motorists for DUI. Four of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. Two were younger than 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, eight; Puna and South Hilo, four each; South Kohala, three; and Hamakua, two.
So far this year, there have been 818 DUI arrests compared to 830 during the same period last year, a decrease of 1.5 percent.
There have been 698 major accidents so far this year compared to 889 during the same period last year, a decrease of 21.5 percent.
To date, there have been 14 official traffic fatalities, compared to 23 fatalities for the same time last year. This represents a decrease of 39.1 percent for fatalities.
There also have been three deaths on Big Island roads police don’t count toward the official the yearly traffic death toll — two because the driver was found to have suffered a medical condition that caused the collision and death and another that occurred in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, which is not under county jurisdiction.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
