Hilo publisher Petroglyph Press released a new book, “The Life and Times of Kamehameha,” which details the history, politics, battles and intrigue of ancient Hawaii.
It is comprised of articles written by William Drake Westervelt that have not been in print since first appearing in Paradise of the Pacific Magazine and Hawaiian Journal of History between 1903 and 1925. These writings provide readers with glimpses, viewpoints and narratives of the early 20th century, telling the history of Kamehameha’s time.
Artwork by noted local artist, the late Dietrich Varez, illustrates the people, lifestyle, folklore and activities portrayed in the stories. Books are available at Basically Books in Hilo and Kona Stories, as well as many book and gift stores throughout Hawaii.
The new book release coincides with the 57th business anniversary of Petroglyph Press on Sept. 2.
he press room is still housed in the same building in which the company was founded in downtown Hilo. The second-generation family business is unique in that books are created entirely in Hilo, from design through printing and distribution.
David and Christine Reed took over management from his parents in 1974 and continued with the mission of disseminating knowledge about Hawaii and its history, culture, folklore and lifestyle.
