“A Cage of Fireflies,” directed by Dance Aoki, is the inaugural show in the annual series of Pacific-based performances, Aloha Theatre’s Voices from the Ring of Fire Series. The play tells the story of three elderly sisters of the kibei generation sent as children to be raised in Okinawa, then returned to live and work in Hawaii.
Two of the sisters confine themselves to their Honolulu apartment, where they enact the rituals of daily life and dream of one day returning to Okinawa. The third, charged with running their family’s orchid nursery, embraces the modern world and disrupts her family’s fragile traditions.
There are three female roles: Yukiko, the eldest sister of the family, has a deep longing to return home to Okinawa, age 75-77; Mitsuko, the middle sister, is also matriarch of her own family of children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, age 70-72; and Kimiko, the youngest sister, age 68-70, lives with Yukiko and is dedicated to taking care of her oldest sister. All roles are available.
The cast will initially meet twice, June 17-18, and then regular rehearsals will commence June 23. The rehearsal and performance schedule is posted online, and will be posted at auditions.
