KEALAKEKUA — A preliminary hearing for a 19-year-old woman accused of murder was waived pending a mental health examination.
On Wednesday, Kaleianuenue Borero-Kaluna of Naalehu appeared in Kona District Court on charges of attempted first-degree murder, second-degree murder and second-degree attempted murder in connection with a fatal stabbing Friday at Whittington Beach Park in Naalehu.
District Court Judge Margaret Masunaga set a hearing to review doctor’s reports for June 19.
Hawaii Island police responded about 3:40 p.m. Friday to the reported stabbing. When they arrived at the scene, officers found two victims, a 36-year-old man and 35-year-old woman with multiple stab wounds.
According to the probable cause statement, the man suffered injuries to his shoulder, right rib/torso area and his right hip area. The woman, later identified as Marie Lyn Boyles, was resting on her left side and “laying in a large pool of blood.” Boyles died at the scene.
The man was taken to Hilo Medical Center in serious condition. As of Monday, he was stable and continues to be treated for his injuries at the hospital.
The man told police he and Boyles were attacked by his girlfriend, who was wielding a 6- to 8-inch long fixed-blade knife, the probable cause statement indicated. Borero-Kaluna was later identified to be the suspect.
According to witnesses, Borero-Kaluna left the scene with another individual in a red pickup truck. She turned herself in shortly after 5 p.m. that day at the Naalehu Police Station.
Borero-Kaluna, who is eight months pregnant, is being detained at Hawaii Community Correctional Center on $150,000 bail.
