A Kurtistown man was charged Thursday with several firearms offenses after allegedly attempting to smuggle weapons into a hospital.
A Kurtistown man was charged Thursday with several firearms offenses after allegedly attempting to smuggle weapons into a hospital.
According to a police report, Randolph Lee Yates, 56, had been transported to the Hilo Medical Center for an undisclosed medical issue.
Upon his arrival, Yates was scanned by hospital security using a metal detector, which discovered two loaded handguns.
One of the handguns was found to have serial numbers that had been scratched off so as to be unreadable.
Yates was charged with two counts of carrying or possessing a loaded firearm on a public highway, two counts of altering firearm identification marks, two counts
of failing to register firearms, and one
count each of failing
to have a permit to acquire a firearm and improper storage of a firearm.
Yates is held pending a $13,500 bail.
He will appear in court today.
