KAILUA-KONA — A Kailua-Kona man charged in a shooting incident that left one woman seriously injured will appear in Kona District Court today.
Investigators from the Kona Criminal Investigation Division charged Walter Gomes III on Tuesday with multiple offenses stemming from the initial incident in which a woman suffered a single gunshot wound to the face on March 20.
The 41-year-old Gomes later led police on an 11-day manhunt that spanned from North Kohala to South Kona until he was caught Sunday in Captain Cook. Gomes was involved in three officer-involved shootings in his attempt to evade capture March 21.
Gomes disappeared into the North Kohala brush on the evening of March 21 and was not officially seen until he was arrested. Eight officers were ultimately placed on administrative leave for the shootings.
Gomes was charged Tuesday with first-degree assault, second-degree assault, ownership or possession of firearm prohibited, first-degree reckless endangering, carry/possessing loaded firearm on highway, two misdemeanor counts of resisting order to stop, three felony counts of resisting order to stop, first-degree terroristic threatening, accidents involving damage to vehicle or property, second-degree reckless endangerin, reckless driving, unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle, promotion of a dangerous drug, and probation violation.
His bail was set at $313,250. Gomes remains in police custody.
