Benigno “Papa” “Tata Ben” Lagat, 94, of Papaikou died Jan. 25 at home. Born in San Nicolas, Ilocos Norte, Philippines, he was a retired heavy equipment operator for the former Hilo Coast Processing Co. and member of Hawaii Island Adult Care and Immaculate Heart Mary Catholic Church. Visitation 6-9 p.m. Thursday, March 7, at Dodo Mortuary Chapel. Wake service at 7 p.m. Visitation again 8:30-9:30 a.m. Friday, March 8, at Immaculate Heart Mary Catholic Church in Papaikou. Mass at 10 a.m. Casual attire. Burial to follow at Homelani Memorial Park, Ilima Section. Survived by sons, Francis (LaDonna) Lagat of Wichita Falls, Texas, Maurice (Sandy) Lagat of Lorena, Texas, and Paul (Leelynn) Lagat of Keaau; daughters, Inez (Mark) Johnson of Papaikou and Carla Lagat (Ely) Ramos of Honolulu; daughter-in-law, Hae Ok Lagat of Las Vegas; brother, Rosalio Lagat of the Philippines; sister, Anecita Lagat of the Philippines; sisters-in-law, Nancy Toribio and Elizabeth Toribio of Hilo, Rose (Ebreo) Toribio of Papaikou, Pauline Toribio and Rose Toribio of Honolulu; 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins.
