Legalize it
In a recent letter to the Tribune-Herald, a writer cited a study that said states that legalized marijuana subsequently have higher auto accident rates than surrounding states that did not legalize marijuana.
However, in 2017 the American Journal for Public Health found that: “Three years after recreational marijuana legalization, changes in motor vehicle crash fatality rates for Washington and Colorado were not statistically different from those in similar states without recreational marijuana legalization.”
The legalization of marijuana seems to have had little impact on traffic death rates, especially compared to the impact of alcohol abuse. We certainly are not going to go back to the prohibition of alcohol with all its related problems. The criminalization of marijuana has downsides similar to prohibition, including black markets that are available to underage users, and unregulated, untaxed products.
Instead of making $350 million in annual cannabis tax revenue as Washington does, Hawaii is spending tax dollars to prosecute and make criminals out of otherwise law-abiding people while making marijuana readily available to school-age children.
It makes no sense.

No to ‘space cowboys’
It’s quite amazing that spaceport people are coming to Hawaii and are claiming to do something good for this island.
Really, folks, wake up!
There is no way you can bring an industry here that has enormous environmental impact on our communities and ‘aina. This proposed project bears many hazards, including a high probability of aluminum oxide and other heavy metals contaminating our land, air and ocean.
Come on!
I commercially fish and was displaced out of Pohoiki by the lava flow. Now, this proposed spaceport might put more fishing areas in danger if the spacemen have their way.
Employing eight people? That’s a joke! It’s not worth the risk!
I cannot speak for W.H. Shipman, but it seems Hawaii County has levied property taxes on Shipman to a point where they must do something with the land.
Think about it: The last dairy farm was just closed down because of supposedly causing pollution to our waters. That was a place producing food and providing employment and contributing to the sustainability of our island. However, now we are talking about letting these space cowboys into our door.
No!
