The state Department of Transportation will conduct subterranean survey work on Highway 11 in Volcano next week.
From Monday (Jan. 7) until Jan. 16, a vehicle containing ground-penetrating radar will travel along Mamalahoa Highway between mile markers 28 and 32 in Volcano.
The vehicle will scan the roadway and underlying terrain for potential subsurface voids generated by the extensive seismic activity during last year’s eruption of Kilauea. Thanks to the hundreds of daily earthquakes in the Volcano area during the eruption, many roads, including Mamalahoa Highway, sustained significant damage, including cracks and multiple sinkholes caused by voids opening beneath the pavement.
While no lanes will be closed during the survey, drivers are advised to expect delays.
The radar vehicle will travel at approximately 15 miles an hour while operating.
Drivers will be permitted to pass the radar vehicle after each one-mile segment, which will take approximately four minutes each.
