The state Sheriff Division said Friday there is a telephone scam where impersonators claiming to be deputy sheriffs call Hawaii residents, tell them they have outstanding warrants and if they don’t pay, sheriffs will arrest them.

The Department of Public Safety said in a statement that sheriffs don’t call people about warrants having to do with missing court.
They will ask for personal information or solicit payment over the phone.
Those receiving calls are advised to not provide credit card numbers or other personal information to callers claiming to represent a law enforcement agency or the courts.
Anyone receiving a call from someone impersonating sheriffs and asking for money should call the police non-emergency line at 935-3311.
