Officers responding to a 10:10 a.m. call June 18 determined that a 2001 Ford E250 van driven by a 39-year-old Hilo man, was traveling southbound on Kinoole when Lytle walked into traffic eastbound, outside of a marked crosswalk. The van struck Lytle, who was transported to Hilo Benioff Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition.

Lytle succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at 8:05 a.m. Wednesday.

The van’s driver wasn’t injured and wasn’t arrested as a result of the collision.

Police continue to investigate but don’t, at this time, think speed, alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash.

The investigation is now classified as a negligent homicide. Potential witnesses are asked to contact Officer Joshua Rodby-Tomas at (808) 961-2339 joshua.rodby-tomas@hawaiicounty.gov. Those who prefer to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at (808) 961-8300.

Lytle’s death is the 14th traffic fatality of 2025, compared to 18 traffic fatalities at the same time last year.
