Born in Hilo, he was a retired paramedic assistant for the state Department of Health, Hilo Day Activity Center, a self-employed Santa Claus, basketball coach, track and field coach and volunteer for Special Olympics, canoe paddler for Kaione and Lanikai canoe clubs on Oahu, member of Saint Joseph Catholic Church and various classic car clubs and Las Vegas Raiders fan.
