Orchid Isle Orchestra’s “Flow of the Tide” concert starts at 4 p.m. on Sunday, June 1, at the Hilo High School Auditorium.
Young Music Studio cello and violin students will spring in with familiar melodies, including works by Handel, Bach and Seitz.
The sound cascade will continue with Hilo High School Orchestra members playing side-by-side with Orchid Isle Orchestra musicians, performing “Knight Riders” and “Dragonhunter.”
Hilo High School Orchestra Director/OIO Concertmaster Alden Young, OIO Resident Conductor David MacKenzie and OIO musicians are all excited to welcome some newer players.
In the concert’s watershed moment, OIO will take the stage to play dance music. One of several OIO concert pieces suggesting movement is a recently composed piece called “The Flow of the Tide,” written by Yukiko Nishimura.
“El Relicario” and another modern piece, “Prelude and Fiesta,” include percussion parts, played by Ilana Moidel-Acevedo and Waiakea High School student Keira Ida Ayu.
In a diversion to Baroque music, two high school violinists — Joanna Coates and Gracie Ju — will perform the solo parts to Vivaldi’s Concerto for Two Violins in A minor, third movement.
OIO is a community string orchestra whose members include students, amateur and professional musicians.
The public is invited to this free concert, but all donations are welcomed.
