The Wailoa Center and the University of Hawaii at Hilo Art Department have announced a free public reception from 5 p.m. to 7 pm. on Friday, July 7, for the international juried exhibition “In the Time of Climate Change,” opening at the Wailoa Center.
The Wailoa Center and the University of Hawaii at Hilo Art Department have announced a free public reception from 5 p.m. to 7 pm. on Friday, July 7, for the international juried exhibition “In the Time of Climate Change,” opening at the Wailoa Center.
The opening evening event will welcome exhibition juror, Jared Yazzie, a Diné artist, designer and owner of the clothing label OXDX — an acronym for the word “overdose” — which Yazzie uses to describe the state of the world and how it relates to the native experience.
“It’s a statement to check your consumption, question your contribution to land and water, and to think back on ancestral teachings,” according to a press release.
The exhibition asked artists to visualize the state of the planet and existential crossroad confronting local communities and nations of the world: “How do we respond to the collective demand for goods and services, whose byproduct may destroy the ecology of the planet? How do we visualize the present, the change or the endgame?”
The free public event will continue from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 8, with a screen print demonstration of an original design by Yazzie.
Please bring your own light-colored cotton T-shirt if you would like to participate.
The Wailoa Center is a state park facility and is free and open to the public during the exhibit. Hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 8.
