Waiakea wins Tennis Team BIIF Championship

HILO — The Waiakea High School boys and girls tennis teams each won the BIIF Team Championships on Saturday.

On both the boys’ and girls’ sides, Waiakea played against Hawai‘i Prep.

The Warriors’ boys team won 3-1. In singles, Iori Furuhata defeated Levi Furchner 6-0 in two sets. In doubles, WHS’ Paul Brilhante and Dayne Kunimoto swept HPA’s Parker Smith and Chaz Fits-Gerald in straight sets of 6-0.

Ka Makani got a victory when Andrew Moe and Clovis Promphan defeated Blake Ideta and Reyn Funai in sets of 7-5 and 6-0.

Waiakea’s Rhys Wilson and Michael Nakano beat William Sculhoff and Paul Hamacher 7-5 and 6-1.

The Waiakea girls won 5-0.

In girls singles, WHS’ Kiora Kunimoto shut out Carlyle Collinson 6-0 twice. Her teammate, Kaiya Ideta, swept Arabella Asuncion 6-3 and 6-1.

In the first doubles match, Chloe Takahashi and Jada Igawa beat Taina Seward and Alexandra Jorgensen 6-1 and 6-0.

Lina Miyazaki and Lanie Takahashi followed up with another win for the Warriors, beating Tiffany Golden and Emily Humphrey 6-4 and 6-3. Kate Newall and Abbie Takamine sealed Waiakea’s win with a 7-5 and 6-3 sweep over Catherine Hulugalle and Madie Buczyna.
