“Experience PTA Day” is back and bigger than ever, with new opportunities and experiences for the community during Pohakuloa Training Area’s annual free open house.
From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, April 20, the U.S. Army Garrison Pohakuloa Training Area will showcase the mission behind the base with meet and greets, booths from community partners, and STEM activities for school-aged youth.
“There is no schedule, so people will be allowed to roam around displays and information booths around PTA,” said public affairs officer Amy Phillips. “Aircrafts will fly overhead at 9 a.m., and then they’ll be displayed on the airfield for everyone to see.”
Soldiers, police and firefighters will all be attending PTA Day to talk to people and answer any questions they have. Firefighters will be hosting a fire hose activity for keiki, as well.
Military aircraft, vehicles and equipment will be available to view, and there will be plenty of personnel around to answer questions and explain each machine.
The PTA Public Works Department also will be displaying bulldozers and other machinery for kids who love big machines.
There will be STEM activities geared toward kids, but adults may be able to learn something, too, according to Phillips.
With three schools confirmed that they will be attending, Phillips is expecting 500 to 800 attendees, but hoping for more.
“This event really showcases that we have a huge mission here and that we are partnered with so many programs that have natural and cultural resources for the community,” Phillips said. “We hosted PTA Day last year, but this will be our first big event since COVID-19”
Phillips suggests bringing closed-toe shoes and a jacket, since it can get cold up on the mountain.
Those entering PTA must bring a form of identification and remember that they will be entering a federal installation.
Phillips also warns that there may be protesters outside, but that everything is safe and secure at PTA.
“This free event is meant for anyone interested in learning more about the base and the people training here,” Phillips said. “We’re excited, and want people to learn about our mission of goodwill and positive community relationships.”
Those interested in attending can arrive at PTA, located just off the Daniel K. Inouye Highway between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Thursday, April 20.
