Elsie J. Carvalho, 92, of Hilo died Oct. 24 at Life Care Center of Hilo. Born in Honomu, she was a retired factory worker for Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Co. and member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. Visitation 8-9 a.m. Monday (Nov. 21) at Dodo Mortuary Chapel. Mass at 9:30 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Graveside service noon at Hawaii Veterans Cemetery No. 2 Pavilion. Survived by daughters, Lela (Lester) Oliveira of Hilo, Yvonne Leithead of Las Vegas, Regina (Kalei) Wery of Juneau, Alaska, and Cynthia Carvalho of Kona; sons, Steven (Cleofe) Carvalho of Kona and Dwight (Kanani) Carvalho Sr. of Hilo; sister, Wilma (Tyron) Revilla of Honomu; sister in-law, Betty Rapoza of Paauilo; 11 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins. Owen Takeo Daimaru, 67, of Hilo died Oct. 23 at home. Born in Hilo, he worked for the Department of Water Supply. Private services held. No flowers or koden (monetary gifts). Survived by companion, Esther Une of Hilo; daughter, Naomi Daimaru of Hilo; brothers, Wayne (Lynne) Daimaru of Kona and Glenn (Gayle) Daimaru of Hilo; sister, Pearl (J.E. Mario Gamiao Laguatan, 82, of Papaikou died Oct. 25 at home. Born in Bangui, Philippines, he was retired from the Hilton Waikoloa Village. Visitation 4-6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 22, at Dodo Mortuary Chapel. Service at 6 p.m. Visitation again 9-10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 23 at the chapel. Service at 10:30 a.m. Burial noon at Homelani Memorial Park, Lehua Section. Survived by wife, Petra Laguatan of Papaikou; daughters, Milagros (Emilio) Aguinaldo of Papaikou, Melde (Arnold) Arellano of Kona and Shirley (Rico) Simpliciano of San Francisco; nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Leovia “Lee” Francis Rodgers, 79, of Kailua-Kona died Oct. 19 at North Hawaii Community Hospital. Born in Beaumont, Texas, he was a retired U.S. Army pilot and Vietnam War vetran, member of Professional Association of Diving Instructors, former owner of Rainbow Divers Inc. on Oahu and Manta Ray Dives of Hawaii in Kona. Urn committal services noon Monday (Nov. 21) at West Hawaii Veterans Cemetery pavilion. Casual attire; no flowers. Survived by wife, Dinah Rodgers of Kailua-Kona; daughters, Wendy Sandell, Becki Rodgers and Michelle Tadani of Kailua-Kona; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Elaine Grace Sommer, 79, of Kurtistown died Nov. 4 at Hawaii Care Choices Pohai Malama Care Center. Born in Alberta, Canada, she was a retired registered nurse for St. Francis Medical Center – Kona Dialysis and member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Graveside committal service at 10 a.m. Tuesday (Nov. 15) at Homelani Memorial Park, Section 2. Casual attire; no flowers. Survived by sons, Dion Machado and Noland (Terri Calahasen Machado) Machado; brothers, Dale (Joan) McDonald and Brent (Debbie) McDonald; seven grandchildren. Arrangements by Dodo Mortuary.

Frances Barbara Thompson, 90, of Hawi died Nov. 10 in Waimea. Born in Honolulu, she was a hardware store cashier. Private service at a later time. Survived by sons, Michael (Gail) Moniz of Washington state and Rex (Sheri) Thompson of Hawi; daughter in law, Julie Thompson of Kohala; 11 grandchildren, great- and great-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Akira Yoshida, 84, of Kealakekua, formerly of Honolulu, died Nov. 8 at Kona Community Hospital. Born in Hilo, he owned Yoshida Wallpaper Co. and was a U.S. Air Force veteran. Services at a later date. Survived by brothers, Ronald (Kimberly) Yoshida of Honolulu and George Yoshida of Kealakekua; sister, Miyoko Yoshida of Kealakekua; nieces and nephews.
