The state Board of Education voted Thursday to approve two new deputy superintendent positions, each of which comes with a $190,000 annual salary.
The appointments will take effect this week.
In a recommendation to BOE Chair Bruce Voss, Superintendent Keith Hayashi stated the positions are intended “to optimize efficiencies within the department and improve the timely delivery of services and opportunities to our students.”
Tammi Oyadomari-Chun will serve as deputy superintendent of strategy where she will formulate plans for school improvements and workforce development, along with advancing future partnerships with government, community and professional organizations.
She previously served as assistant superintendent at the DOE from June 2015 to July 2017, and was vice president of the Hawaii Community Foundation.
“Dr. Oyadomari-Chun’s extensive experience in education research, data, policy, program design and implementation, and strategic planning and management will make her an invaluable member of our leadership team,” Hayashi said in a press release.
Curt Otaguro will serve as deputy superintendent of operations, where he will streamline operations while recruiting and retaining staff at the school, complex and state levels.
Otaguro previously served as comptroller and director of the state Department of Accounting and General Services.
“Mr. Otaguro is well-versed in managing a wide range of work across multiple offices statewide,” said Hayashi. “In addition to his work in the public sector, he has extensive experience in the private sector leading modernization efforts.”
The salaries for both individuals were selected based on a chart provided by Hayashi that outlines the median salaries of associate superintendents based on enrollment.
For districts with above 100,000 students, the median salary was listed at $180,975 with a maximum of $220,000 annually.
The two positions are in addition to the DOE’s existing deputy superintendent position, held by Heidi Armstrong, who oversees academics. Armstrong has been serving in the role since July 1.
