Michael Kitamura of Troop 82 was awarded the Eagle Scout rank on Feb. 8.

Kitamura, a senior at Waiakea High School, began his scouting journey 14 years ago in Waiakeawaena Pack 65 where he earned the Arrow of Light, Cub Scouting’s highest award.

Kitamura is proud of the lessons he learned along the Eagle Scout trail. Less than 4% of all Scouts in the U.S. have achieved the rank of Eagle Scout since the start of the scouting program in 1912.

Kitamura’s Eagle project consisted of securing funding for and building sitting benches for New Hope Christian Fellowship Church in Hilo. The project was completed with the assistance of fellow scouts and parents.

Kitamura was a member of Waiakea High’s canoe paddling and golf teams. He has served as junior staff for Hui Okinawa’s Children’s Cultural Day Camp, is an avid fisherman and diver, and also loves working on cars and computers.

Scouts BSA Troop 82 is sponsored by Hilo Meishoin.
